The Tucson Branch of the NAACP is accepting scholarship applications for the 2021-2022 academic year from high school graduates and currently enrolled college, university, or vocational school students. This scholarship is open to all students regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin.

Selection of recipients will be based principally on the applicant's response to an essay question and completed application package.

Basic Eligibility: The applicant must be a high school graduate or currently enrolled in a college, university, or vocational school. The $1,000 scholarship will not be awarded to any student who receives a full tuition/room and board scholarship from their institution.

Application Requirements

A Completed Application Should Include:

  • A written recommendation/character reference:

    • Please submit two letters of recommendation from a supervisor, coworker, community leader, teacher, counselor, or other adult who is not a family member.

  • Community Service and the number of hours performed.

  • An academic transcript.

    • The transcript must show a GPA of 3.0 or higher.​

  • An essay of 300-500 words.

    • Essay Prompt: Do you agree or disagree that your vote counts in the local, state, ​& national elections? (Please elaborate on your response.)


  • Scholarship Deadline: Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Results Notifications & Award Requirements

Applicants will be notified of the results of their application by July 5, 2021. If you are awarded an NAACP scholarship, you or a representative will be expected to attend at least one NAACP General Meeting within three months of receiving the award.

The general meetings are held at 6:00 PM on the second Monday of each month at Donna Liggins Recreation Center, 2160 N. 6th Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85705. Due to the coronavirus global health pandemic, we will not be meeting in person but will update you with information on how to attend. 

Scholarship recipients will have one (1) year to use the scholarship and the funds will be mailed directly to the educational institution upon notification that you are a registered student.
